Conservatives have warned that the Government is preparing to give the go ahead to the destruction of the ‘Green Belt‘ after Hazel Blears refused to offer any firm assurances that the special protection afforded to designated rural areas will not be scrapped.
With the Communities Secretary insisting that more greenfield land must be released for the construction of affordable homes, Shadow Planning Minister Jacqui Lait said she feared the Prime Minister was ready to "give the green light to Green Belt destruction on a massive scale".
Ms Lait stressed that environmental protection and tackling climate change need to be at the heart of Government policy. She also accepted the need to build more homes.
But she warned: "The Government should work with local communities - and must respect the wishes of local people who want to protect their Green Belt for current and future generations."
Ms Lait spoke out after Hazel Blears promised MPs that the Government would move quickly to tackle the housing shortage, which would mean freeing up greater areas of land for development. She said: "I think we are going to have a tussle, because some people are concerned about environmental issues. But I think the priority has to be to build these homes."
The minister said she was not in a position to offer categoric assurances on the green belt boundaries, and indicated that the shortage of available land served as a big block on the construction of much needed new homes.
